About Saba
What
is the best way to book Iris House? Will I get a better deal if I book
direct with you?
We live in the United Kingdom so for people coming from either the U.K
or Continental Europe it is easier because of the time difference to
contact us directly. We
can also advise you on flights and connections to the island since we
are familiar with KLM and Air Frances schedules. It is possible to get
to Saba in one day from Europe depending on the carrier that you chose.
For clients coming from either North America or Canada we suggest that
you contact either Beth at Dive Saba Travel or Lynn or Denise at Sea
Saba. Beth knows the island inside and out as she used to live there.
She is also really good at getting the best airfares from North America
and Canada. Lynn and Denise are great for answering questions on dive
sites and what's happening on the island. Either Beth or Lynn and Denise
are your best bets if you are coming from the States or Canada. We all
work off the same reservation book so whoever you call we will be able
to immediately inform you of availability during your desired time.
Prices are the same whether you book direct with us or with Beth and
Lynn and Denise.
We
have a large group that would like to come to Saba? In addition to Iris
House where else could we accommodate them?
We work very closely with Wim and Johanna at Juliana's
Hotel. Before we bought the house this is where we also stayed (and
still do sometimes when the house is rented out and we are on the island).
In addition to the very nice hotel rooms they also have two great cottages
available for rent. Juliana’s has a great pool and very good restaurant
(we always eat breakfast there. It is the best on the island!). Just
contact either us or Beth and Lynn or Denise and we will do our best
to put something together for you.
What
is the currency on Saba?
The official currency is the Netherlands Antilles Guilder. U.S dollars
are accepted everywhere on the island. The exchange rate is Guilders
1.8 to USD 1.00. USD Traveller’s checks are accepted everywhere
with proof of identification. Most places take credit cards as well.
The recent addition of an ATM machine (the first on saba) is a godsend
to tourists & islanders alike!
What
is the voltage on Saba?
Voltage is the same as the United States, which is 110v. Iris House
has one 220v outlet so those visitors coming from Europe can recharge
their cameras etc.
What
type of dress should I bring?
Light clothes for during the day when the temperatures are usually in
the high 70’s to low 80’s. During the night a light sweater
would be recommended especially during the winter months.
Do
I need to dress up for dinner?
No. Saba is a very relaxed and informal island. You can go to all of
our restaurants in shorts and t-shirts if you wish.
How
is the night life on Saba?
It is really what you make it. Many guests just hang out at the house
listening to the stereo or reading. We are always expanding the collection
of music either on CD or MP3. Should you wish to browse through our
selection let us know and we will forward it to you. If you see something
that you really want to listen to while you are on the island just let
us know and if there is enough time we will burn copies so that the
tunes are there for you upon you arrival and will become part of the
island collection.
You
can go out to one of the excellent restaurants
for dinner (all within walking distance in Windwardside). If you just
want to have a drink and chat with the locals we usually go to Swinging
Doors or Saba’s Treasure which are a 3-minute walk from the house.
Should
I buy duty free liquor in the States or Europe to consume on Saba?
Only if you want to pay higher prices. There are no taxes or duties
on Alcohol or cigarettes on Saba and prices are very reasonable by Caribbean
Standards. There is a good selection of wines, spirits and beer at both
Corner Imports and Big Rock at very good prices.
Do
I need to rent a car?
Not really. As Iris House is located in Windwardside you can walk to
all the shops and restaurants and bars in the village. Most restaurants
outside the village will come and pick you up and bring you back if
you dine with them. For getting around to the other villages our friendly
taxi drivers will pick you up and return you to the house. The government
sets prices and you do not have to worry about getting ripped off.
How
about shopping on Saba?
We have a fully stocked supermarket in Windwardside where you can buy provisions for your stay. If you want to have the fridge stocked up
on your arrival let us know and it will be there upon your arrival.
Fresh fish is available and at very reasonable prices. Just ask either
Mona, our housekeeper, or Garvis or Manny your taxi drivers and they
most likely will be able to get some for you.
There
are several very nice shops in Windwardside where you can pick up souvenir
for back home. Sea Saba has the best selection of T-shirts on the island
and a stop there is definitely worth your time.
Do
you have an on-island manager?
Yes. Marylene Van Dam, a long time resident of Saba is our manager.
She will check you in either on the day of your arrival o r the next morning
and is always available during your stay should you need her. She also bakes the best
bread on the island so see if you can buy a loaf off her. Our housekeeper, Mona Hassell, will be in during your stay at least once a week to change linens and sheets.
